How To Shuck and Serve Oysters on a Half Shell

    Jun 18 2018 Leave a Comment

WWe love fresh oysters on a half shell served on crushed ice with lemon wedges in the summertime! There isn’t a better place to sip on a glass of wine and enjoy oysters on a half shell then on the waterfront of Nantucket. If you are craving fresh oysters then you’ve come to the right place. Nantucket Island is surrounded by the beautiful Atlantic Ocean which provides our islanders and visitors with an abundance of delicious seafood. Plus who doesn’t love fresh seafood when they’re vacationing on an island?

    Glidden’s Island Seafood | 115 Pleasant St, Nantucket | (508) 228-0912

Consider shucking your own and head on over to the Glidden’s Island Seafood where all the locals shop. This local fresh seafood market has been Nantucket’s Finest Fish Market since 1898.  They offer the finest selection of Cape Cod steamer clams, P.E.I. mussels, Nantucket oysters, and Nantucket Bay Scallops. Glidden’s has a holding tank for live lobsters and they will gladly cook them for you with a phone call and during the summer season they offer lobster clambakes to go!

Nothing makes us happier than fresh seafood for dinner. If you’ve ever had fresh oysters you know that you need two very important items – cut proof kitchen gloves and a quality knife that can get between the two shells and hold up to a good twist and wrist turn.

Shucking your own is an affordable way to enjoy oysters on Nantucket at home or with friends but does requires a little skill. If you are a newbie then you will want to order a shucking knife and some chainmail shucking gloves so you don’t hurt yourself.  You can also purchase a shucking knife at the local market. After you open a few, you’ll get the hang off it and you’ll be a pro in no time. Lastly, you will need some crushed ice, fresh lemons, and a bottle of wine to enjoy the makings of a fantastic evening of fresh seafood!

HOW TO SHUCK AND SERVE FRESH OYSTERS ON A HALF SHELL

    1. Rinse  a bag of freshly harvested oysters under cold running water to remove grit and then place in ice for 1 hour.

    2. Put on a set of Chainmail Shucking Gloves. These Cut Resistant Gloves are a best seller on Amazon and are more affordable.

    3. Place an oyster in one protected hand with the rounded cup side down in your palm and the narrower hinged point toward you.

    4. Grab an Oyster Knife (pictured above) with your other hand. insert it into the hinge, just between the shells, and, with gentle pressure, twist the blade to prop the shell open. This one is also a very good Oyster Knife and is great for popping even the most difficult hinges open.

    5. Run the blade over the meat along the top of the shell to server the oyster from its top shell.

    6. Continue using a twisting motion to separate the top and bottom shells.

    7. Lift off the top shell and discard unless you want to save them for a cool DYI project.

    8. Cut under the oyster to release it from the bottom of the shell, being careful to keep as much liquid in the shell as possible.

    9. Serve the opened oysters on a bed of crushed ice displayed on an Oyster Serving Tray. Repeat steps 3-8 until you shuck enough for everyone.

    10. Lastly, garnish with fresh lemon wedges, a little parsley, and some delicious dipping sauces.

DIY Soothing Soak for Soft Soles

    May 02 2018 Leave a Comment

Living on an island in the summer encourages a lifestyle of casual laid-back living. We call it living life salty! Everyday we spend hours on the beach, dipping our toes in the salty waters, and taking long walks along the sandy beaches collecting seashells. Sounds amazing right? Well, for the most part it is… but… all the sand can take a toll on your feet forming thick callous like skin.

While everyone enjoys treating themselves to a pedicure once in a while. It is equally nice to be able to soak your tired feet in a soothing foot bath at the end of each day. This soothing, homemade mixture of Epsom salt, lime zest and various natural ingredients would make a wonderful party favor for your Besties or for Mom on Mother’s Day. I promise that your friends and Mom will really enjoy this gift. Use our chic label (coming soon), affix it to a jar, and gift it to a special friend.

    INGREDIENTS

    • 2 cups of Epsom Salt
    • 1/2 cup of Baking Soda
    • Zest of one Lime
    • 3-4 drops of Lime Essential Oil
    • 3-4 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil

    MIX IT UP!

To make the foot soak, combine 2 cups of Epsom salts with 1/2 cup baking soda and zest of one lime in a large bowl, and add  3-4 drops of lime essential oil and 3-4 drops of peppermint essential oil. Stir with wooden spoon to mix thoroughly. If you would like to add a little color add one drop of food color of your choice – i.e. green or blue. Stir well and pour the mixture into a jar and use within a few weeks. We suggest storing the mixture in a sealable container in the refrigerator to help keep it fresh since this recipe calls for the zest of one lime. When ready to use … pour about 1/4 cup of the foot soak mixture into a large bowl, add hot water, and soak your feet for 15 to 20 minutes. Enjoy a good book or read the latest issue of Vogue. When finished … dry off feet and apply a high quality moisturizer preferably something with Shea Butter in it. You will feel relaxed and ready for a restful night’s sleep.

    • Epsom Salt soothes aches, eliminates smells and softens rough skin.  It helps pull toxins out of your body while adding magnesium into your body.  It reduces overall inflammation, helps prevent or relieve migraines, and eases daily stress.
    • Baking Soda is good for exfoliating and eliminating oders, leaving your skin smooth and soft. It will also help neutralize any chemicals in your water.
    • Lime is refreshing and invigorating and is routinely used for its energizing aroma. It is well known for its ability to cleanse, purify and renew the spirit and the mind.
    • Peppermint is a refreshing, cooling, and soothing soak. The menthol induces a cooling sensation, and can help to cool you down, help ease tension headaches and muscular aches and pains. Peppermint also has anti-inflammatory properties.

The oils you choose to use is the key to enhancing your overall experience.  Peppermint to cool, soothe, and invigorate.  Lavender to relax.  Eucalyptus as a powerful anti-bacterial, anti-viral soak.  Tea Tree Oil as a natural antiseptic (disinfectant) with potent anti-inflammatory abilities. Tea Tree Oil is produced from a shrub-like tree known as Melaleuca in Australia. According to the University of Sydney, native aboriginals are believed to have taken advantage of its many healing benefits to treat skin conditions for thousands of year.

    GIFT IT!

With Mother’s Day just around the corner put some of the mixture in a cute jar, include this chic label (coming soon), and tie on a scoop with a pretty ribbon before giving it as a gift to Mom or your best friend.

    2. Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture, using a wooden spoon and blend together.
    3. Heat a lightly oiled frying pan over medium high heat.
    4. Pour batter onto the frying pan, using about 1/2 cup for each pancake. Brown on both sides and serve hot.
    5. Between pancake layers we like to add homemade raspberry syrup that we learned to make from WickedGoodKitchen.com and Reddi Whip Cream for mouth watering goodness.
    6. Top with fresh raspberries and sprinkle on a little confectionery sugar to add a touch of sweetness.
    7. Garnish with mint to make it picture perfect!

If you are not a fan of raspberries try substituting fresh strawberries or blueberries with Vermont Maple Syrup. Let us know which one you liked the best!

    Mussels in White Wine Sauce

    Apr 07 2018 Leave a Comment

MMussels cooked in a white wine garlic-butter sauce served with sliced crusty Artisan bread for dipping. Living on an island provides an abundance of fresh seafood so it’s a good thing we love it! This is one of our favorite quick and easy seafood dinners so we truly hope you enjoy it! Prep: 10 minutes | Inactive: 30 minutes | Cook: 20 minutes.

    Ingredients

    3 Pounds Cultivated Mussels
    1/3 Cup All-Purpose Flour
    2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
    2 Tablespoons Unsalted Butter
    3 Whole Garlic Cloves, Minced
    1 Cup Chopped Shallots
    1 Tablespoon Fresh Thyme Leaves
    1/2 Cup Canned Plum Tomatoes
    1/2 Teaspoon Good Saffron Threads
    1/3 Cup Chopped Flat-Leaf Parsley
    1 Cup Good White Wine
    2 Teaspoons Kosher Salt
1 Teaspoon Freshly Ground Black Pepper
1 Loaf Crusty Artisan Bread Of Choice

    Preparation

To clean the mussels, put them in a large bowl with 2 quarts of water and the flour and soak for 30 minutes, or until the mussels disgorge any sand. Drain the mussels, then remove the “beard” from each with your fingers. If they’re dirty, scrub the mussels with a brush under running water. Discard any mussels whose shells aren’t tightly shut.

In a large (non-aluminum) stockpot, heat the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the shallots and cook for 5 minutes; then add the garlic and cook for 3 more minutes, or until the shallots are translucent. Add the tomatoes, saffron, parsley, thyme, white wine, and salt and pepper. Bring to a boil.

Add the mussels, then cover the pot, and cook over medium heat for 8 to 10 minutes, until all the mussels are opened. Stir occasionally to be sure the mussels don’t burn on the bottom. Discard any unopened mussels. Pour the mussels and the sauce into a large bowl and serve hot. We topped our mussels with steamed lobster tails and crayfish.

While mussels are cooking – Preheat the oven to 350 °F (or 177 °C). Wrap the Artisan bread in foil and place the bread on an oven rack for 8 to 10 minutes. This is the best temperature for reheating bread. The foil will protect the crust and help prevent it from getting burned while the inside of the bread heats. Slice bread and enjoy with your seafood dinner!

    Happy-Healthy Breakfast Bowls

    Apr 07 2018 Leave a Comment

TThe next time you rush out the door in the morning without something to eat, remember this: Breakfast is the single most important meal of the day. Why do we say this? A healthy breakfast provides your body with the fuel it needs to replenish your blood glucose levels after eight hours of sleep. It fuels your brain and body with the energy it needs to focus at work or at home and helps us make smart decisions throughout the day.

A healthy breakfast combines good carbs and fiber with protein and essential vitamins and minerals that gives you energy and satisfies your appetite. Plus eating a fiber-rich breakfast helps you fill up and keeps you full for longer so that you do not consume extra calories throughout the day. Eating a healthy breakfast boosts your metabolism, curbs your hunger, and helps prevent binge eating.

Our favorite go-to breakfast are these healthy breakfast bowls! They are perfect for starting your day off right and are quick and easy to make.

    Ingredients

    • 1 serving quick-cooking or old-fashioned rolled oats
    • 1/2 cup blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and sliced kiwi (or fruit of your choice)
    • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
    • 1 tablespoon agave nectar

    Preparation

Prepare the oats according to the package directions. Top with the fresh fruit such as blueberries, strawberries, and kiwi. Sprinkle on some Chia seeds. Chia seeds are considered a “superfood” and for a good reason. Just one spoonful of chia seeds provides 5 grams of fiber, 4 grams of fat, and 2 grams of protein. Last but not least – drizzle on the agave nectar, a low-glycemic nectar with a mild, neutral flavor to add a little sweetness!

Remember – eating a healthy breakfast refuels your body, enhances your mood, improves your concentration, and helps to maintain a healthy body weight. If you don’t have time to eat before leaving the house – take it to go!

5 Ways to Start Your Day Happy

    Feb 15 2018 Leave a Comment

SStart your day happy and relaxed and you will greatly increase your chances of a healthy, productive day. Too often people feel rushed in the morning – scrambling to get ready for work and getting the kids off to school. By the time you get to work you can feel a little overwhelmed! Try these five thing to help you start your day off happy:

    1. WAKE UP EARLY. Seriously. You may have to go to bed earlier to get 8 hours of sleep but waking up 15 to 30 minutes earlier will allow you to take your time going through your morning routine, without rushing. We suggest that you pick out your work outfit the night before so that your morning is less stressful. Make sure it is pressed and ready to wear. Then you can begin your morning by lying in bed, waking up slowly. It’s just as important to have time to prepare yourself mentally as it is physically. So don’t give in to that snooze button.

    2. HYDRATE. Drinking warm lemon water first thing in the morning gives the body a chance to absorb some vitamin C and can boost your energy level and your immune system. Vitamin C is also good for the adrenal glands which are responsible for balancing hormones and can potentially help reduce the affects of stress. So as you get ready for the day, drink an entire glass or two of lemon water and see how your energy levels improve through the day. You may even want to bring a sports bottle with you to work so you can hydrate throughout the day….

    Sconset Sweet Cherry Parfait

    Jan 24 2018 Leave a Comment

CCherries are a sweet summertime treat that are good for you! Like edible rubies – these sweet and succulent gems are perfect for breakfast, snacking, or a delicious dessert. Cherries are sweet yet firm with just a faint hint of tartness and come in shades of deep red. They’re gorgeous and delicious!

With fresh cherries on hand we contemplated on whether to make a summery cobbler or a sweet cherry parfait. We decided to go with the sweet cherry parfait that is easy to make and fun to share with friends.

    Sconset Sweet Cherry Parfait

Prep Time: 15 mins | Cook Time: 30 mins | Total Time: 45 mins | Makes approximately 4 parfaits.

    Ingredients

    • 1 pound fresh deep red cherries, pitted and halved
    • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
    • 1/2 cup slivered almonds
    • 1/2 cup shredded coconut
    • 1 cup of Chobani greek plain yogurt (or vanilla or cherry)
    • Honey, sweeten to taste
    • Top with real whip cream and fresh baked cookie crumbs (or top with granola for healthy version)

     Instructions

    1. Preheat oven to 400-degrees F.
    2. Toss cherries with balsamic vinegar and let marinade for at least 30 minutes.
    3. On a roasting pan, evenly spread balsamic covered cherries and roast for 25 minutes at 400-degrees F.  Save room for the slivered almonds and coconut and add them to the roasting pan for the last 2 to 3 minutes, as these roast quickly.
    4. In a separately bowl mix plain Greek yogurt with a light honey to sweeten.
    5. Layer all ingredients evenly in Mason jars and top with real whip cream.

Begin by tossing the fresh pitted cherries with a good balsamic vinegar and marinate for 30 minutes. Once the cherries have marinated spread them evenly over a roasting pan. Roasting always brings out wonderful flavor in foods, and fresh cherries are no exception. Leave a little space to roast the slivered almonds and shredded coconut for the last 2 to 3 minutes. A little nutty crunch adds a nice twist to this parfait and is perfect for layering. Once everything is roasted and toasted, layer the ingredients with the Greek yogurt that is sweetened with honey. If you prefer you may use vanilla or cherry yogurt as a substitute for the plain Greek yogurt. Top with real whip cream and fresh baked cookies crumbs. Invite your friends over and enjoy.

    Nestled in Nantucket

    Feb 28 2016 Leave a Comment

Before the stars have left the skies,

In the early morning fog I rise,

To a frosty, fiery sleepy light,

    Nestled in the snowy bight,

    Glistening in windswept dunes,

Winter is… such a glorious sight!

    Enjoy Nantucket in the Winter

    Feb 08 2016 Leave a Comment

After today’s blizzard conditions and 65 MPH winds one might wonder what’s to love about Nantucket in the winter.  While the weather has been a bit chilly lately – Nantucket can be quite beautiful in the winter. The island is calm and quiet – a great place to escape to with that special person in your life for Valentine’s Day. Cozy up by a fire and then indulge in some delicious gourmet chocolates and sip on some bubbly. Sounds like a perfect Valentine’s day right? The since you probably have President’s day off – wake up early Monday morning – get a delicious pastry or two, some hot coffee before heading out to see how beautiful the island is in the winter. While many businesses close down for the winter months there are some restaurants that are open year round. Here are a few images we snapped while exploring the island last week.

    Nantucket Christmas Stroll

    Dec 14 2015 Leave a Comment

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas on Nantucket with hundreds of old-school Christmas lights illuminating seven-foot Christmas trees in the heart of Nantucket. A celebration of the lights and decorations of Christmas past are on full display. The 20-foot tree at the top of Main Street is decorated by a local artist or decorator and “magically” talks to all who visit it during Christmas Stroll Saturday.

Every year Christmas Stroll is held the first full weekend of December. It is part of the month-long celebration known as Nantucket Noel, which is organized by the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce. Christmas Stroll weekend is an enchanting community holiday celebration that welcomes visitors from around the world.

    #Arby's Crew?

    #Arby’s Crew?

Midday on Stroll Saturday, the Nantucket Town Crier, in full regalia, will ring in Christmas Stroll, and then lead everyone to the wharves where Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive on the island via a Coast Guard vessel. From there they ride up Main Street in a horse-drawn carriage accompanied by the Town Crier. Carolers in Victorian costumes, bell ringers, student choirs and other musicians perform on Main Street, which is closed to traffic for the day.

    Santa and Mrs. Claus Arrive

During Christmas Stroll, a unique assortment of local crafters, island shops, and galleries open their doors for special hours, giveaways, and sales. Many merchants still offer holiday refreshments to shoppers. The Nantucket Whaling Museum is transformed into a glittering winter wonderland, with the month-long Festival of Trees showcasing more than 80 uniquely decorated Christmas trees. Local restaurant cook up some delightful holiday dishes and local inns and hotels welcome visitors with cozy quarters to relax and unwind.

    Nantucket Weekend Getaway

    Aug 30 2015 Leave a Comment

IF YOU ASK A LOCAL who’s spent a lifetime on Nantucket, they’ll tell you the best time to visit Nantucket is after Labor Day weekend, when all the summer tourists and college students return to the mainland. The island is much quieter, the traffic is more manageable, the weather is blissful, and there’s something close to magical about this small island, set like a jagged jewel in the Atlantic less than 30 miles off Cape Cod. The locals often refer to the island as “Paradise” and its true Nantucket offers an incredible amount of charm with its cobblestone streets, gray-shingled cottages covered in pink climbing roses, and miles of soft sandy beaches. All of the enjoyment is there for the taking, but with a lot less traffic and people and almost everything is still open.  It’s a perfect time to unwind on island time….

Nantucket homes are amazingly beautiful because most home owners just love to add lovely nautical décor as a nod to our Nantucket Whaling past-time.  Just walk down almost any side street and you will find homes with scallop shell door knockers, sea shells in the window sills, Nantucket baskets filled with hydrangeas, pretty quarter-board signs that gives the home a special name (like the one pictured above). We love these extra homey touches that make Nantucket a special place to visit.

For more information on this event please visit:  www.operahousecup.org

The Opera House Cup takes its name from the eponymous venue whose owner, in 1973, had the idea of organizing the first all-wooden sail boats, single-hulled classic boat regatta on the East Coast. It is the oldest regatta of this kind to take place along the East Coast of the United States and attracts some of the finest sailboats in the world.

Each year, a large fleet of vintage boats gathers, giving life to a unique and thrilling spectacle against the backdrop of the picturesque heart of Nantucket. The luxury Italian timepiece manufacturer, Panerai is the title sponsor of the Opera House Cup.

    Foggy Morning from Ladies Beach

Our favorite place to walk and enjoy a peaceful morning is Ladies Beach. The surf is often heavy and rip currents can be strong. Occasionally local surfers will come here to surf. To access the beach, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. This beach has no lifeguards and no facilities. It is a peaceful spot early in the morning so it’s a great place to take a relaxing walk on the beach.

    Siasconset’s Charming Cottages

    Jul 01 2015 Leave a Comment

In the heart of Siasconset Village (a.k.a. Sconset) is a quaint miniature fishing village that has gone almost unchanged since the early 1700’s. The rose covered cottages are adorn with whimsical quarterboard signs and nautical décor. Some cottages even reflect the year they were built. Can you see how old the cottage below is? Yes – you read correctly – 1886! That’s 129 years old, which is quite amazing since Nantucket has had it’s fair share of storms over the years.

    Siasconset Cottage

Left over from the days of looking for whale spouts from shore, the Sconset Bluff Walk, is an unadvertised public way that takes you right through the front yards of the island’s finest shingle-style cottages. The first time we did the Sconset Bluff Walk – we had a hard time believing that it was a public path and that we were allowed to casually stroll through and enjoy the delightfully charming gardens, rose covered cottages, and nautical bliss. There is something really special about this area and all the whimsical details you find along the way.

The path begins at the end of Front Street in Sconset. There is a sign that says FOOTPATH ONLY, NO BIKES, which appears to refer to a very steep and narrow trail heading down to the right to Codfish Park. The path you want to take is the less obvious one to the left, through the privet hedges and along the lip of the land. Residents are accustomed to the parade of strangers, but if you choose to enjoy an afternoon or evening adventure – please respect their privacy. Our residence take great pride in their homes and landscaping and it shows! Do you have a favorite home in ‘Sconset Village? We want to know. Share your favorite Sconset photos by emailing us at info@heartofnantucket.com.

Some hydrangeas are like chameleons and can change their color depending on the soil they are planted in. These flowers get their color from the pH in the soil. By adjusting the pH, you can change blue flowers into pink or vice versa. Cool right? Here’s what you need to know:…

The Brant Point Lighthouse welcomed thousands of visitors to the island last weekend for the Nantucket Daffodil Festival with it’s large beautiful daffodil wreath. The cobblestone streets in the heart of Nantucket were a buzz with visitors taking in the festivities.

We couldn’t resist capturing the moment for everyone to see. Below giant daffodils Victoria MacKenzie-Childs and Mary Collins stand atop a 1961 Land Rover Series IIA 88 during the classic car parade on Main Street welcoming visitors to the Antique Car show. And boy did they do a wonderful job putting a smile on everyone’s face!  Which is why we want to say “Thank You” for making our day!

    Daffodil Festival Weekend – April 27th – April 29th, 2018

The Nantucket Daffodil Festival has grown into a full-scale celebration of winter´s thaw and this year everyone is ready for some beautiful weather and spring flowers. From early-April to mid-May, over three million daffodils of every color, shape and size will bloom on Nantucket Island.

The central event of this fun-filled weekend is the Antique Car Parade, showcasing over 100 vintage cars all decked out with sunny yellow daffodils and other creative embellishments.  Don’t miss their arrival on Main Street at 9:30 a.m on Saturday, April 29th. Vote for Most Authentic, Best Decorated, People’s choice & Best in Show and don’t forget to take some group selfies!

At 12:00 p.m., the antique cars wind through town to the charming village of Siasconset for the Annual Daffodil Tailgate Picnic, attended by visitors and locals alike.  Enjoy an al fresco lunch, relax by the sea, and mingle with both islanders and visitors. The picnics run the gamut from elaborate haute cuisine to traditional tailgate food. Didn’t prepare any food – grab some takeout fare but don’t miss the Daffodil Tailgate Picnic.  For a complete schedule of Daffodil Events visit www.daffodilfestival.com

    Top 5 Daffodil Festival Activities:

    1) Pick out a really cute outfit to wear to the Antique Car Parade and Daffodil Tailgate!

The weekend is characterized by the colors yellow and green – so look for these colors when deciding what to wear.  Shades of yellow and beige is also a great choice. Many people dress in a classic style but we suggest a comfortable casual attire that you will feel comfortable in all day!  Remember to wear comfortable shoes that will be good on cobblestones, sand, and lush lawns.

    2) Make your own Daffy Hat (just add a Daffodil or two) or Headband.  Many islanders and visitors make Daffy Hats which makes it that much more fun! If you’re not a hat person you may want to consider a headband like the one shown below.

    3) Make Pineapple Coolers.  Pineapple Cooler Recipe found on CountryLiving.com
Fresh lavender and lemon verbena add subtle depth to this refreshing drink. Simply add rum to make it into a cocktail.
    4) Prepare some yummy tailgating recipes ahead of time so you can fully enjoy the day of events.

    5) Dress your dog up in Daffodil attire and let him/her strut up Main Street in the Daffy Dog Parade. We love to see all the doggies decked out. Email us your pictures at info@heartofnantucket.com and we will post the cutest pictures!  Please include your dogs name.

The day’s festivities are rounded out by a family picnic and concert at children’s Beach, “Daffy” Hat Pageant, Children’s Daffodil Parade, the Nantucket Garden Club’s annual Daffodil Show, the “Daffy” Dog Parade, A Daffodil Marketplace, and Window Decorating Contest. We hope to see you and your families at the Nantucket Daffodil Festival this year!

    DIY Oar Headboard

    Mar 22 2015 Leave a Comment

This DIY Oar Headboard is an inspiration piece for anyone living by the sea. It offers a unique charm to any coastal home and is not that difficult to make. You will need to collect approximately 14 to 16 reclaimed wooden oars (depending on the size of your bed). Once you have what you need you will need to attach them with screws to a couple strong boards that can be screwed securely to the wall. The bed should cover these boards so you should only see the beauty of the reclaimed oars.  You won’t want these oars falling onto your head during the night while you are sleeping so it is extremely important that they are very secure when you screw it to the wall.

Located at the foot of Main Street, just a short walk from Straight Wharf (where the ferry docks) – The Club Car is a fun “cozy, little spot” with great ambiance, service, and atmosphere. …

    Snow covered streets of Nantucket

Winter on Nantucket is calm, cozy, and romantic. It’s when the Little Grey Lady turns back to it’s laid-back, small-town roots. It’s exquisitely peaceful and scenic with it’s snow covered streets, twinkling street lights, and the smell of warm log fires. The perfect setting to relax, recharge, and revitalize. …

    Queen Anne's Lace

One of our favorite wild flowers is the Queen Anne’s Lace because of it’s delicate yet detailed pattern.  It’s a lovely flower to photograph and can be found throughout the island.

    Nantucket in the Fall

The weather here on Nantucket has simply been beautiful, crisp fall air, and brilliant blue skies.  October is a great time to visit Nantucket and truly enjoy the natural beauty without the crowds.  Shop the local stores and dine out to meet some of the locals and find out why they love Nantucket so much.  Have you ever visited Nantucket after Labor Day?  What did you think?  Do you like visiting the island when it’s hopping with visitors during the summer months or do you enjoy visiting the island when it’s less crowded and more relaxed?

    Park by Nantucket Airport

A perfect place to enjoy the amazing statues representing life on Nantucket.  This one is one of my favorites as the children look so realistic.  The grass is nice and green and it is the perfect space to toss a Frisbee around and have a little fun!  There is plenty of space between statues so you could also bring a picnic basket and enjoy a nice relaxing afternoon with your favorite book and some good food!  Has anyone read any really good books lately?  I just finished reading The Book Thief by Markus Zusak which I really enjoyed but now I’m looking for another good book to read.  Any suggestions?

    Fairy Contest

On September 19th and 20th the Nantucket Island Fair delivered another fun filled day for family and friends.  The island event resembles that of a traditional country fair and brings out a true community spirit.

    Live Music

This event was held at Tom Nevers Field and there was something for everyone!  We really enjoyed the Fairy House contest as well as Gertrude’s Harvest Exhibition, where local islanders showcased their hand made and home grown talents.
