Opera House Cup Regatta – August 19, 2018

    Aug 17 2015 Leave a Comment

Every year in the third weekend of August, the island of Nantucket, hosts the Opera House Cup, the second leg of the North American Circuit of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge. Spectators from all over come to the island to watch this event. For more information on this event please visit:  www.operahousecup.org

The Opera House Cup takes its name from the eponymous venue whose owner, in 1973, had the idea of organizing the first all-wooden sail boats, single-hulled classic boat regatta on the East Coast. It is the oldest regatta of this kind to take place along the East Coast of the United States and attracts some of the finest sailboats in the world.

Each year, a large fleet of vintage boats gathers, giving life to a unique and thrilling spectacle against the backdrop of the picturesque heart of Nantucket. The luxury Italian timepiece manufacturer, Panerai is the title sponsor of the Opera House Cup.

We just had to post this amazing drone video by TakeFlight Video of the Rainbow Parade and the Nantucket Lightship leaving the dock prior to the start of the Opera House Cup Regatta, August 17, 2014. This has to be one of the best videos we have ever seen. Click HERE to see the video.

Years Running: 46 | Club: Nantucket Community Sailing (Nantucket, MA – USA) | Founded: 1994

The OHC Regatta and Awards Party benefit Nantucket Community Sailing.

Nantucket Race Week and the Opera House Cup Regatta is a Clean Regatta as certified by Sailors for the Sea. Click here to see a video on what you can do to be a part of the clean regatta.

    July 4th on Nantucket

    Jul 08 2015 Leave a Comment

Not even the gray skies would put a damper on the July 4th Water Fight on Main Street. Hundreds of people showed up on Main Street to take in the morning activities: face painting, sand art, the bicycle parade, the dunk tank, watermelon eating contests, and the spectacular 15-minute water fight between two fire trucks and their giant hoses!

    Around the Memorial

The crowd gets a warm 4th of July welcome!

    Watermelon Eating Contest

The Watermelon Eating Contest begins. Who doesn’t love watermelon???

    Water Gun Fight

The water gun fight starts here and then becomes the fire truck water fight. This is where its all happening but if you don’t want to get soaking wet then watch from a distance! Otherwise – Have FUN and get WET! We think the three people on the roof top have the best view in town.

We decide to watch from a distance! Next year we will come prepared to get soaking wet in our Nantucket 4th of July t-shirts. We hope you will join us!

    Pink Peony Perfection

    Jul 04 2015 Leave a Comment

The fattest and most scrumptious of all flowers, a rare fusion of fluff and majesty, the peony is now coming into bloom.   –Henry Mitchell, American writer (1923-93)

Peony blooms are magnificently beautiful in the Spring, with lush foliage all Summer long. These perennials may live longer than you do. The plants require little maintenance as long as they are planted properly and establish themselves. …

    Foggy Morning from Ladies Beach

    Jul 03 2015 Leave a Comment

Our favorite place to walk and enjoy a peaceful morning is Ladies Beach. The surf is often heavy and rip currents can be strong. Occasionally local surfers will come here to surf. To access the beach, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. This beach has no lifeguards and no facilities. It is a peaceful spot early in the morning so it’s a great place to take a relaxing walk on the beach.

    Siasconset’s Charming Cottages

    Jul 01 2015 Leave a Comment

In the heart of Siasconset Village (a.k.a. Sconset) is a quaint miniature fishing village that has gone almost unchanged since the early 1700’s. The rose covered cottages are adorn with whimsical quarterboard signs and nautical décor. Some cottages even reflect the year they were built. Can you see how old the cottage below is? Yes – you read correctly – 1886! That’s 129 years old, which is quite amazing since Nantucket has had it’s fair share of storms over the years.

    Siasconset Cottage

Left over from the days of looking for whale spouts from shore, the Sconset Bluff Walk, is an unadvertised public way that takes you right through the front yards of the island’s finest shingle-style cottages. The first time we did the Sconset Bluff Walk – we had a hard time believing that it was a public path and that we were allowed to casually stroll through and enjoy the delightfully charming gardens, rose covered cottages, and nautical bliss. There is something really special about this area and all the whimsical details you find along the way.

The path begins at the end of Front Street in Sconset. There is a sign that says FOOTPATH ONLY, NO BIKES, which appears to refer to a very steep and narrow trail heading down to the right to Codfish Park. The path you want to take is the less obvious one to the left, through the privet hedges and along the lip of the land. Residents are accustomed to the parade of strangers, but if you choose to enjoy an afternoon or evening adventure – please respect their privacy. Our residence take great pride in their homes and landscaping and it shows! Do you have a favorite home in ‘Sconset Village? We want to know. Share your favorite Sconset photos by emailing us at info@heartofnantucket.com.

    Nantucket Boat Basin

    May 24 2015 Leave a Comment

The Figawi Race has once again filled the Boat Basin with lots of beautiful sail boats with summer right around the corner.  We can’t wait for sunny days at the beach, evening strolls down Main Street, ice cream from the Juice Bar, and live music from local restaurants and bars that makes Nantucket so much fun to visit.
