Monument Square (a.k.a. Four Corners)

Nantucket’s first encounter with combat was the Civil War, during which 73 of the 339 Nantucket men who enlisted were killed in action or by illness. The Soldiers and Sailors Monument honoring them (pictured above) is located on upper Main Street at a spot islanders commonly refer to as the “Four Corners.”

According to the Nantucket Historical Association, this neighborhood is known as Monument Square where Main, Upper Main, Milk, and Gardner Streets intersect. This was at one time the thriving civic hub of Nantucket. During the eighteenth century, the town gradually shifted closer to the harbor and in 1798, the town changed its name from Sherborn/Sherburne to Nantucket. During this time, Monument Square became the site of civic buildings, a meetinghouse, an early school, and the dwellings of some of Nantucket’s most prominent citizens.

Christopher Starbuck House, Built ca. 1690-1757

The Christopher Starbuck House located at
105 Main Street was originally built facing the south before orientation to the street was
necessary. Located across from the Civil War Monument – it has become a popular historical attraction. The homes down this street have come to symbolize the island’s whaling era. During the summer months the Nantucket Preservation Trust offers a 75 minute walking tour called, “A Walk Down Main Street.”

Rounding Brant Point Lighthouse

Early morning fishing at Brant Point is a favorite among the locals. Just a short distance from the heart of Nantucket – it’s easy to get to and you can enjoy the boats coming in and out of the harbor.

What can we say – Nantucket has some of the best flower gardens in New England! This year the Nantucket Garden Festival celebrated it’s sixth annual event on July 23rd and 24th benefiting the Nantucket Lighthouse School, an independent day school serving island children, pre-school through 8th grade. Founded in 1999, Nantucket Lighthouse School provides a developmentally appropriate education that engages the whole child – head, heart, and hand.
