A Sailor’s Delight

As you round Brant Point to enter the heart of Nantucket you can’t help but notice all the lovely sailboats that are moored in the harbor.  The colors are strikingly beautiful against the calm blue water, which is why I couldn’t resist snapping a few pics of these lovely vessels.  There is something really exciting to be out at sea with the wind billowing in the sails and the waves crashing against the bow.  Next time you visit the island, you may want to consider booking a late afternoon (around 4:00 p.m.) sailing adventure.  If you go on a clear day – you just might be lucky enough to watch a lovely sunset around the Smith Point / Madaket area and you will probably learn a few interesting historical facts along the way.

Peter England Nantucket

Down on the Old South Wharf is the charming, compact outpost of Peter England, which is now run by Kari England and her brother. This store carries traditional, very wearable soft cotton sweaters for men and women, as well as high-end exotic blends of silk and bamboo. These sweaters are perfect for cool evenings on the sea and if you can’t find something to suit your needs, they offer custom orders. A few years ago they opened an annex a few doors up the wharf called the Yachting Collection. This collection of clothing is totally up our alley – lots of navy, ivory, and nautical stripes. A handsome classic collection worthy of seeing first hand! So next time you plan a trip to the island you may want to check out all the lovely clothes at Peter England Nantucket.

A lovely beach to visit while on the island.  The surf is calm, the sand is soft, and the access to the beach offers lovely views of Nantucket Sound and Great Point.  This beach is located between Dionis and Jetties beaches with access from Cliff Road.  There are no lifeguards, no facilities and very little parking. You will have to descend down many steps but it is worth the hike as the beach is not crowded and offers a good place for an afternoon picnic with friends and family. It is also a great place to paddle board. This beach also offers great sunsets and during July 4th great views of the fireworks.

Cisco Beach Surf

One of our favorite beaches to go to is Cisco Beach because it is less crowded and is generally fairly quiet. It is about a 4 mile bike ride from town and is located at the end of Hummock Pond Road. Cisco Beach often has heavy surf and is very popular with surfers and young adults. The waves are fantastic for surfing and boogie boarding. Many surfers learn their craft here and it can be very entertaining to watch. Many of the people that go to this beach, stop at Cisco’s Brewery on their way out!

Cisco Beach is not a beach for families with young children as the surf is often heavy and the waves can get quite rough, rip currents can be strong, and there are no facilities. There are lifeguards during the summer season on the public side of Cisco Beach.

An Evening Stroll
