On a recent trip out to Madaket to catch a sunset we decided to stop and check out the view from Madaket Millie’s home. It was extremely beautiful and tranquil and I could see why she made this area her home for so many years. “Madaket Millie” Jewett, a Nantucket legend, spent her life caring for the beaches, the animals and the people of Madaket. Reserved, yet strong-minded, Millie embodied the self reliant spirit of native islanders.

Also called the Jethro Coffin House, this is the oldest residence on Nantucket.
Built as a wedding gift in 1686 for Jethro Coffin and Mary Gardner, it is the sole surviving structure from the island’s original seventeenth-century English settlement. Jethro Coffin, who is listed as a blacksmith at the time of his death in 1727, was the grandson of one of the island’s first white settlers and original proprietors, Tristram Coffin. …
One of our favorite places to visit on the island is the charming village of ‘Sconset. It is a lovely place to explore – some of the homes date back to the 1700’s, the gardens are delightful, lovely quarter boards adorn the homes as well as weathervanes like the one pictured in this post and it’s only a short walk to the beach.

Many visitors of Nantucket don’t realize that Brant Point is just a short walk from town. The best time to get a good picture of the little lighthouse is early morning before too many people arrive or towards the evening when the sun is setting. It’s a lovely place to sit and watch the boats come in and out of the harbor. Many locals come here in the morning to go fishing.
