Celebrating 4th of July on Nantucket

    Jul 04 2016 Leave a Comment

Every year thousands of people flock to Nantucket to enjoy a little 4th of July summer fun! This year the 4th of July holiday festivities begin at 10:00 a.m. at the top of Main Street with Greta Feeney, and featured artists from the NCMC, singing the National Anthem, followed by America the Beautiful.

On Union Street there is a dunk tank and and who doesn’t love to get someone soaking wet! Bring your friends and family and see who can be the first to dunk the person in the tank. The traditional Watermelon Eating contest will be at the lower end of Main Street, the Matt Fee Tea Toss will be in front of 25 Main Street, Face Painting will be in front of 30/32 Main Street, a Pie Eating Contest will be in front of 46 Main Street, a Puppet Show will be held on the steps of the Methodist Church from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. And from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. is the Bike Decorating contest which generally parades down Main Street.

But… the real fun begins at 11:45 a.m. and goes to 12:00 p.m. when the Water Fight between town firefighters starts with the old hand pumper fire truck, the modern ladder fire truck, and the Boynton Lane Reserves with a 1927 American LaFrance fire truck; as they indulge in a good old fashion water fight on Main Street soaking hundreds of visitors and locals that dare to brave the powerful water soaking. Prefect for a hot day but if you don’t want to get too wet – don’t forget to bring an umbrella! The temperature will be 75 degrees and mostly sunny! So… when you’re finished enjoying the Water Fight on Main Street you can go to the beach for a little rest and relaxation.

Not even the gray skies would put a damper on the July 4th Water Fight on Main Street. Hundreds of people showed up on Main Street to take in the morning activities: face painting, sand art, the bicycle parade, the dunk tank, watermelon eating contests, and the spectacular 15-minute water fight between two fire trucks and their giant hoses!

The crowd gets a warm 4th of July welcome!

    Watermelon Eating Contest

    Water Gun Fight

The water gun fight starts here and then becomes the fire truck water fight. This is where its all happening but if you don’t want to get soaking wet then watch from a distance! Otherwise – Have FUN and get WET! We think the three people on the roof top have the best view in town.
