The Ireland Galleries located on Old South Wharf is one of my favorite places to visit. I spent many summers working on docks planting all the flower beds and window boxes. Such a lovely place that brings such fond memories.
Nantucket Beach Plums
Beach plums are indigenous to Nantucket. You can find Beach Plums growing in sand dunes and along the edges of roads. They bloom in the Spring and are covered with little white flowers. A late summer fruit, they generally ripen by Labor Day but keep your eye out in August as sometimes they ripen early. We enjoy making heart shaped pastries with homemade Beach Plum Jelly. Too Cold for Ice Cream
This is a great place to get ice cream in the summer. It’s just a bit too cold for ice cream now – which is why so many islanders go to warmer grounds in the winter months. Just think in the summer the temperature always feel about 10 degrees cooler than the main land but in the winter that extra polar blasts are bone chilling. Time to light a fire and kick back and watch a good movie.
